About Laparoscopic Hysterectomy Surgery

Hysterectomy is an operation to remove a woman’s uterus. Laparoscopic Hysterectomy involves small surgical cuts (keyhole incisions) in the belly and the surgery is performed using a Laparoscope. Recovery time is faster too (2 weeks compared with 6 weeks after Abdominal Hysterectomy). However, it may not be possible in some cases like, if the uterus is bigger than a 4 month pregnancy, if the patient is very heavy or if she’s had multiple previous operations in her lower abdomen.

Clinical examination:

To look for signs of disease

Pap smear:

To detect the presence of abnormal cervical cells or cervical cancer.

Biopsy:

To detect abnormal cells in the uterine lining or endometrial cancer.

Ultrasound:

It may show the size of uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps or ovarian cysts.

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy surgery requires only a few small (about one-half inch long) incisions in your abdomen. An instrument called the Laparoscope is used in such kind of procedures. This instrument is inserted by making a hole in the body, by which the Surgeon is able to examine and operate upon the pelvic organs. Other surgical instruments are used to perform the surgery through separate small incisions. Your uterus can be removed in small pieces through the incisions, through abdomen, or through your vagina (which is called a Laparoscopic vaginal Hysterectomy).

The other kind of procedure is called as Robotic Hysterectomy. This kind of procedure is a much advanced procedure. In this kind of procedure, a robotic machine is used which is controlled by the Surgeon. This machine performs the operation on the patient, under the control of the Surgeon.

It is well known that surgery performed with the help of Laparoscope results in lesser pain, the chances of having an associated infection is less and the stay at the Hospital can also be shorter. This makes Laparoscopic surgery a preferred choice for Doctors and patients.

Uncontrolled bleeding:

You might have uncontrolled bleeding.

Spread of the cancer:

The cancer from the Ovary, Cervix or the Uterus can spread to other organs.

Anaemia:

Regular blood loss can make you anaemic.

Chronic pain:

Long standing pelvic pain can cause you difficulty in day to day activities.

Post procedure care

Care at Hospital:

1. A Laparoscopic Hysterectomy is usually done as an outpatient procedure.
2. Recovery time with Laparoscopic surgery is faster, 2-3 weeks compared with 6 weeks that is required after abdominal Hysterectomy.
3. You will be given medicine for pain and to prevent infection. But pain and risk of infection is less after the Laparoscopic procedure.
4. You will be encouraged to get up and walk around soon after surgery.

Care at Home:

1. During Hysterectomy recovery, you will need to use sanitary pads for vaginal bleeding and discharge. It’s normal to have bloody vaginal drainage for several days to weeks after a Hysterectomy.
2. Once you are at home, you can move around the house and do small small work, but also take a good amount of rest. Also, you should go for short walks and keep increasing the distance day by day as you feel comfortable.
3. You should not lift heavy objects until your doctor says you can. Do not put anything in your vagina during the first 6 weeks. That includes douching, having sex, and using tampons.
4. After you recover, you should continue to see your healthcare provider for routine gynecologic exams and general health care.
5. Depending on what the actual reason of Hysterectomy has been, in future you might require screenings for Cervical cancer or Pelvic examinations.
6. After the procedure, you will not have periods and you will not be able to get pregnant.
